Revel in astounding HD clarity with the BDP-S350 Blu-ray Disc player. The most noticeable additions to this year's model are the Ethernet port that lets you download firmware updates directly to the player, and -- with one of those firmware updates -- access web content encoded to Blu-ray discs via BD-Live, compatibility with the Bonus View feature of select Blu-ray movies, and a USB port that allows you to add more storage to access the growing number of special features that will be available given the immense storage capacity of Blu-ray discs themselves. This player also outputs a Full 1080/24p True Cinema picture, and upscales your existing DVD collection to 1080p when using an HDMI connection. Dolby TrueHD capability delivers lossless sound that is true to the original studio master. Bringing it all together is the new icon based Xcross Media Bar, which provides simple navigation of the player's menu system. + Repairtech 3 Year Audio Extended Warranty Protection (Items Priced Under $500) - High Performance HDMI-HDMI Gold Tipped Black Cable (6 ft.)

"Great Blu Ray for the price" 2009-10-28
By GP (Encino, CA United States)
I have two of these now and they work great. I have one on an advanced AV system and one connected directly to TV and both work great and offer excellent video and audio. The remote on this S-350 is much better than the newer S360 as it offers an eject button and the settings are better when using with a Sony TV.

 "Sony Blu Ray player" 2009-02-23
By T. Stratton (Chambersburg, PA USA)
Bought this Player on sale for about half price. Now I think I know why. Sony claims unit will play both BluRay and conventional DVD disk. I found some std. disks won't play correctly. One new disk I bought will play fine on my other DVD player, but on the Sony Blu Ray the sound is garbled and cuts in and out. A friend found the same thing on his same unit. Contacted Sony and was told to upgrade firmware and reset to factory defaults....did nothing to cure problem. A big disappointment re: Sony products.

Other disks play OK. I think Sony dumped this model and know it has flaws. If it worked on all disks, I would give it a rating of 5. Sadley two of us know it has problems.

 "Great High Definition player" 2008-08-04
By Kelly J. Wilson (Wichita)
I've owned this player for over 1 1/2 years and after the initial firmware updates it has been flawless and even quicker to load now (which was one of it's largest drawbacks).

I know you've read the so called complaints about it only out-putting 1080i signal, but if you have a quality 1080p HDTV it just de-interlaces the signal and you see a full 1080p picture anyway.

I'd have given this 5 stars but it still is just a little slow to start-up, not real bad just slower then a regular DVD player is.

I own both a PS3 and this HD DVD player and while I really like my PS3 my XA1 still delivers a better upscaled picture of regular DVDs (not huge but still better).

Most of the negative reviews are just Blu-Ray supporters posting with hidden agendas or people that were not aware of the need at first for firmware updates or the few problems with early HD DVDs and combo DVDS and got impatient and frustrated.

 "Long live HD DVD!" 2008-04-03
By J. Aravindhan
It's sad, HD dvd has died a premature death.I don't think it was given a fair chance against Blu Ray( Warner Bros and Walmart saw to it).I always had this sneaky feeling that Toshiba knew the end was near and began to cut back on production costs(look at the company's HD-A35 as compared to HD-XA1,XA2).The HD-A35 was built to a price and it showed.

As for the HD-XA1,pictures never did it justice. You must see it for real and you'll appreciate what the market is going to miss.

Picture quality is superb.I use a Sony full hd lcd tv and maybe the Sony actually flatters the HD-XA1.

If you can put up with the minor problems(long bootup, firmware updates)

go for it.

 "Stay away!" 2008-01-15
By T. Hendrix
HD DVD is a dead format! Warner Brothers is going to stop producing HD DVD discs soon. Do a search and you will see many articles about this. The only studios that will be making HD DVD's are Paramount/Dreamworks and Universal. Disney, Buena Vista, Sony, Warner Brothers, New Line, MGM, and Lionsgate all release movies exclusively on Blu-ray.

Do yourself a favor and avoid HD DVD players. The reason the prices are so cheap is that Toshiba knows it is dead and is probably clearing out remaining inventory. You've been warned!

 "Piece of junk" 2009-12-14
By Ciprian Nedelcu (New York)
Plays games on its own with you having no control over the situation. Loading a disk is an adventure on it's own. Most don't play out of the box. The controls are so slow that if you press open tray 10 times in a row it will freeze. Sometimes it shuts down and restarts on it's own. Now it is stuck on a screen with a rotating disk for the last 35 min and is unresponding. Our strategy is this: I turn it on, then I go get the disk from my bag and after about 2 minutes the tray will open. I stick it in and then we go and start cooking dinner. Hopefully, when we are done, the menu will be available for play and we'll be able to watch. 50% of the cases the main menu never shows. The other thing I enjoy a lot is the trailers. There is no way to skip - you'll get a message that "this function is prohibited by this disk" !!! In other words, the disk is forbidding me to spend my time the way I want and instead watch endless trailers of movies that I have already seen.

The whole BD system is a nightmare but this particular player is the worst piece of electronics that I have ever owned. And to spend "sony" price on this garbage is absolutely ridiculous.

Never before had an inanimate thing frustrated me to this degree and hopefully never again. Shame on Sony!!!

"info for bdp s300 read on!" 2009-08-26
By R. Dalton (ca, usa)
hello i am writing this review because of all the negative reviews this profile 1.0 player has gotten which i think is a bad rap! First let me say i own 3 of these units and a bdp s500 which is also a great player from sony.I have owned my original unit for 2 years without any real problems at all! First off to all the readers that may not know keep your firmware up to date but the most important thing about this unit is when you do update each firmware you must do a full system reboot! After firmware is complete turn the unit back on without a disc in until it completely powers on.Then push down and hold the stop button with one hand and then push the power button and hold both until unit shuts down. After you have finished this power on the unit again and reset all your settings to what you need since by doing this all your old settings go away so you must re-enter them that is the only pain with this unit! I do this every time i do a firmware update and have never had a problem with any of them skipping, freezing powering down etc! Also purchase a maxell blu ray disc lens cleaner wich has small holes in the disc and creates a wind blowing action to clear away any dust on your lazer lens! Do not use brush lazer lens cleaning discs in a blu ray player because it may ruin the lens! You can buy one here on amazon and it never wears out since you are not using any brushes to clean it! I hope this review has helped! Enjoy!

"Picture Good, but slow and relatively short-lived" 2009-08-14
By Ben Franklin (Minneapolis)
I purchased two of these Blu-Ray players two years ago, and while the picture quality was excellent for blu-ray discs and the upscaling feature a notable improvement over others I had prior to these players, but I found them to be very slow loading. Also, two years after purchase, the optical read on them is wearing out, causing them to be unable to read discs in good condition from time to time. The loading time also seems to be getting slower over time. At this point, there are any number of better blu-ray players on the market with faster load times and more features. I have been a loyal Sony fan (I own a Sony TV and receiver as well) but am disappointed in their product offerings for blu-ray players- even the new ones just available- and was disappointed with the product quality here as well. As a result, I replaced these blu-ray players with the Oppo BDP-83, which has much faster load times, reference quality video, and near reference-quality audio as well. I particularly like the fact that the Oppo BDP-83 also plays SACDs as well- a notable deficiency in Sony's offerings and surprising in that they invented both formats.

Bottom line, these blu-ray players are outdated. Look elsewhere.

By M. Sedgwick (Biloxi, MS United States)
I'm approaching fifty, so I am no novice. I have owned lots of Sony products in my life, but this player is the nadir of my experiences with ALL brands of electronics. Its controls are not even responsive to normal commands: even powering up the unit is difficult. I have owned the player for six months, but have only been able to use it for 10-12 hours. Most of the time, it just presents an unbearable obstacle. This model is boat anchor material. Beware!!!

 "Freezing - Can't Even Watch a Movie Anymore" 2009-03-22
By Stephen M. Debruler (Indianapolis, IN)
When I bought a Sony BDP-S301, I enjoyed it enough to buy another for my other TV. At first, both worked fine, though a little slow to start up or accept an eject command. After awhile, both started either rebooting while loading or freezing up part-way through a movie. The problem has gotten so bad, I haven't been able to get either to work properly for an entire movie for several months. I've upgraded the firmware through several releases to try to resolve the problem, always without success. Don't waste your money on this one!

 "Not bad." 2009-12-29
By Erik Pagan
I'm still in the process of testing it, but everything seems to be working as advertised. I didn't realize there is no HDMI, but I don't have a high definition tv so that doesn't really apply to me anyway. I have tried playing AVI files off of discs and it works fine. I also tried plugging in an external drive directly into the USB port provided and all folders containing media were accessable with ease. I just started using it and it seems to be working fine, but if it starts falling apart in the next couple of weeks I will be writing a new review in a diffferent tune.

 "Not worth it" 2009-12-24
By F. Oquendo (San Antonio)
Lets begin with the obvious: No HDMI; for $10.00 less I got myself an HDMI ready, brand new player with just about the same features. Remote control is huge; 80's style. The card and USB reader can only work with certain flash readers...so be prepare to search and try different brand of flash memory to use.

Now the most serious issues: I bought this DVD player and placed it in an exercise room to use and view an exercise DVD program, which contains 13 DVDs. The DVD player skiped or freezed every fifteen or twenty minutes. At first I thought there was a problem with the disc, so I cleaned and reinserted the disc and got the same result. I then tried different discs with the same result. I tried original movies discs, recorded discs, music discs and so forth with no luck. All those discs I tried work exceptionally well on my $39.00 DVD player, which is HDMI ready, plays DVI files and upconvert all movies.

I don't recommend it.

This player produces as expected. The lack of multichannel analog output doesn't limit me as I use the HDMI to my receiver. If you do not have HDMI on your reciever this is not the player for you.

Images was great and after playing the 1st HD-DVD with it my wife commented on what a how clear the picture was.

My only dislike of the player was the time to open the dvd tray when 1st powering on the unit. It takes approx. 30 sec.

"HD-D2 delivers stunning picture for DVDs and HD DVDs" 2007-06-02
By s8ist (South Florida)
Right now there is no excuse not to buy a Toshiba HD-A2 or HD-D2 player (which are practically the same with the exception of their names). Even if used as just an upconverting player, the D2 does a fantastic job outdoing the Samsung upscaling DVD player that it replaced. If you have Netflix, you can rent from a full library of HD titles. The DVD quality looks so great, you'll want to keep this one around even if Blu-ray emerges the winner. But with this player getting such a sweet price point, and getting to experience a few killer titles in true HD, blu-ray has a lot to be nervous about.

People,Toshiba knows these units power off that's why they sold most of them to third party dealers so they didn't have to pickup the repair price.Believe me i know i can't tell you the person's name who informed me.

 "Superb" 2008-07-05
By Eric Everhard (Dallas, TX)
Just got my refurbised XA2, which I plan to use for watching mostly SD DVD's. I don't want to buy duplicates of HD DVD's or Blu Rays ( I have Sony BDP SE1) of DVD's that I own. I popped in my Crimson Tide DVD (which I bought 10 years ago). All I can say is WOW! I compared the PQ to my old DVD player and the XA2 just blows it away. More detail, richer colors and more contrast. Also the sound is unbelievable. More bass and the surround effect is amazing. As for HD DVD's this is the best player out there, hands down. I have an XBOX 360 with add on drive but the XA2 smokes the XBOX in both the PQ and sound areas. It's a shame that Toshiba lost the format war, because this is much better HD player than my Sony BDP SE1. Long live HD DVD!!!

PS. The Onkyo HD 305 is a rebadged version of the XA2, and you can find it for around the same price as XA2. But don't buy a refurbed one. My one just died. See my review of the 305

"Random Power-Off, Eventual Failure of Audio" 2008-05-21

I bought one of these expensive units, in part for its great Reon processors, which do a wonderful job of upsampling regular DVDs.

But my unit stopped being able to play HD DVD's soon after I got it. It just turns itself off randomly after 5 to 30 minutes. It still played regular DVDs, but then a few weeks later, the audio failed. It just blasts noise and is completely useless now.

"STILL a great player. You won't be disappointed." 2008-05-02

I'm not going to go too much into the end of HD DVD and the format war. I'm just glad that Toshiba was able to get such a great product out. The REON chip can allow you to customize your settings to make all of your existing DVD collection look great. It's built like a tank and is just an all around attractive player. Do yourself a favor - if you can get one at a reasonable price, go ahead and grab one and scoop up some fire-sale HD DVDs in the process. @~10-15 bucks each, they are cheaper than DVDs and the same quality as Blu. However, no Blu (standalone) player even comes close to matching this player. It supports all of the Hi-def audio codecs as well. What's not to love?
